2023 in Review

2023 has been over for a little over a month now so I think it’s time we took stock of all the cool stuff and not so cool stuff that happened over the course of the last year. Let’s dive in!

This year was another rough year for businesses as both Bar None and The Abbey were forced to shut down, nixing two venues for live music and other events from the underground music community in St. John’s. Aside from that, things got rougher as members of the music community mourned the loss of Will Hapgood, the owner of The Deck who passed away suddenly earlier in 2023. His loss sent shockwaves throughout the community and resulted in an enormous show happening at the Bowring Park Amphitheater to celebrate his life and memory.

An absurd amount of new music was released throughout the year, perhaps more so than any year prior since I’ve been involved in this scene. A slew of new records from bands like The Skeats and Category VI were joined by a cavalcade of EPs from the continuously exploding hardcore punk crowd that seems to churn out new bands at the same frequency that rabbits reproduce.

There were also a ton of mainlander bands who came through Corner Brook and St. John’s this year, including Montreal black metal bands Akitsa and Infernach, Halifax d-beat warriors Black Dog, long time Newfoundland expats Brutal Youth, Montreal hardcore group Deadbolt, New Brunswick stoner punks Diner Drugs, Montreal death metal power trio Obelisk, Toronto thrashers Ammo and Californian NWOTHM upstarts Night Demon, as well as Halifax deathcore ensemble Pale Ache. For a province that sees precious few touring acts pulling through, this past year was exceptionally great.

We also held the very first edition of the Heavy NFLD Fest this past year! This was something that was a long time coming, and has always been my ultimate goal for this project, so finally seeing it come to fruition was a triumph. We’re hoping to do it again this year so stay tuned for Heavy NFLD Fest Vol. II!

Here’s hoping that this year brings with it more good news and less of the bad. Here’s to a kickass 2024.

Album Review: Despertá – Despertá

DespertáDespertá
October 27th, 2023
Hardcore Punk / Goth Punk / Post Punk
Independently Released
St. John’s, Newfoundland

Despertá is the second, self-titled release from St. John’s Spanish-language hardcore punks Despertá, following the release of their 2021 demo. When I first dug into this thing I wasn’t really sure what to expect based on the tags. I thought I might experience something a bit on the softer, more atmospheric side of things since post punk and goth punk tend to be a bit moodier (not that these ideas are not found within this record, they certainly are there). What I got, however, was one of the loudest and angriest releases I’ve heard come out of Newfoundland in 2023.

This album, if you can call it that based on its short 15 minute runtime, is a quick and to the point, aggressive offering of catchy, no nonsense hardcore punk tunes that fits in extremely well with the new wave of hardcore punk and post punk bands that we’re currently living in. If you’re familiar at all with the Montreal post punk scene with bands such as Uzu, Ilusión, Puffer, Glowing Orb, Béton Armé, or other such groups, then you’ve got a great idea of what this thing sounds like (Despertá, if you’re reading this, this is your sign to please come to Montreal and play with these bands).

The vocal performance on here is excellent. While normally this style of high pitched yelling turns me off from a record’s sound, here it doesn’t. It’s exactly suited to the vibe of the music, meeting the snarling guitar tones and popping drums with pissed off screaming that mixes in with the violent instrumentation to join the cacophony of raw, unfiltered noise. It’s packed with energy and frustration and is emotive as all hell. I love the few moments where the singer’s voice moves past the “cleaner” screaming into a full-throated scream right at the end of a bar. It’s excellent.

The guitars and bass are loud, crunchy and in your face. A song like “Mirar Dentro” exemplifies perhaps the most vicious guitar work with quick chord changes and d-beat style riffing, whereas other songs like the bass-led “Peor Enemiga” offers variety between the slower, moodier riffs before launching into wicked fast d-beat riffage once again. I appreciate how there are a few moments throughout this record where the guitars and bass take on a bit more of an atmospheric role, like on the tracks “Cómplices” and “Mundo Oscuro”, which take on more of a true post punk or goth punk aesthetic than most of the other cuts on here. There’s a lot of different approaches to composition here and it works wonders for the album’s flow.

The drumming is frantic, dynamic and creative to boot. While there’s plenty of punk music that features relatively straightforward drumming, the percussive section here seeks to keep things interesting, changing techniques and approaching different sections of these tracks with different beats in mind. I like how multiple songs can feature slower blast beats, d-beats and standard punk rock type beats without it ever feeling tired or lacking in imagination. Some of my favourite beats come on the slow-to-ultra-fast “Mirar Dentro” as well as the somewhat angular drumming on the album’s closer, “La Salida”.

I also love the production here. All of the instrumentation and vocal work is cranked up to the nth degree. All of it feels like it threatens to explode out of your speakers, with the amps begging to be let up past the 10 setting and the microphone barely able to contain the screams. This record was recorded and mixed by Jake Nicoll and mastered by Micah Brown, both of whom clearly knew exactly how to get the kind of sound that this album deserves. This is how modern hardcore punk should sound.

Christeen, Nadia, Jonny, and Pepa have crafted a magnificent piece of restless, ferocious and completely awesome hardcore punk, and is easily one of the best punk releases to come out of Newfoundland in 2023. I wish I knew which musician played what instrument so I could credit them properly, but for now I’ll just say that this four piece has become one of my favourite punk bands in St. John’s and I sincerely hope they continue to put out material that’s as high quality as this release.

Final Verdict: 10/10
Flawless

Favourite Tracks:
“Veneno”
“Autoestima”
“Cómplices”
“Mundo Oscuro”
“No Esperes Nada”
“Mirar Dentro”
“Peor Enemiga”
“La Salida”

The demo in question, entitled Remembered Demos, was released on March 2nd, 2023.
