Leather Up Your Ass / Doom ‘An Blue to Perform in St. John’s / Holyrood in October

Posters designed by Johnny Rawkhard and Lariat Art.

Two heavy Montreal acts will be making their way to Newfoundland this October thanks to Justin Dean at Make It So Productions. Leather Up Your Ass, a four-piece cover band that serves as a tribute to the best of the best of 80’s metal, consisting of Nick Guerin (Dungeon Works Productions) on vocals, Lee “Whiskey” Hinchey (Doom ‘An Blue, ex-Mindrip, ex-Mutank) and Armen Apekian on guitars, Dano Apekian (Ashes of Eden, Ex Deo) on bass, and Jimmy “Bones” Antle (Doom ‘An Blue, Murtenscythe, Guttrot) on drums, will be making their way to the island as the headlining act.

Joining them will be Doom ‘An Blue, a two piece rock and roll / heavy metal band consisting of Hinchey and Antle on guitar and drums respectively with a rotating cast of mad-villains on bass and vocals for each song. The group performs a combination of original tunes as well as covers, featuring guest musicians such as Fez Khan (Crosstitution), Jesse James Dimitri (Doomed Caravan), and many more.

As an extra special treat, Leather Up Your Ass and Doom ‘An Blue will also be joined by Toronto, Ontario heavy metal band Black Absinthe. All three bands will be performing in Newfoundland for the very first time.

The first show will take place in St. John’s at The Rockhouse on Friday, October 21st, 2022 where they will be joined by local folk metal stalwarts Sons of an Eastern Moon. Doors open at 9:00 PM and the show starts at 10:00 PM.

The second show will take place in Holyrood at The Hat Lounge on Saturday, October 22nd, 2022 where St. John’s old school punks Uneeda will open up the night. Doors open at 7:00 PM and the show starts at 8:00 PM. Both shows require a $15 cover charge.

Doom ‘An Blue Back in the Studio

Montreal riff-slinging duo Doom ‘An Blue, featuring guitarist Lee Heache and drummer Jimmy Antle, have hit the studio once again. The band has become a fixture of the Montreal live scene for their unique approach to recording and performance, involving a revolving door of bassists and vocalists for every song they have. So far, the group have release three singles with accompanying music videos, including the instrumental “Two Bit Son of a Bitch”, “Wicked Serotonin” (featuring Jesse James Dimitri of Doomed Caravan on vocals and Dan Matheson on bass) and “Ran Down” (featuring Steph Lune of Death Proof and Iza Coulombe of The Horny Bitches). Whatever this new track is, we’re sure it’s going to rock just as hard as the band’s previous material. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

While we wait for this upcoming new song, you can check out “Ran Down” through our Bandcamp embed below.

October 2020 in Review

Sadly, as the pandemic lumbers on through the final quarter of 2020 we find ourselves with little news to report on. The biggest story of all is that the space formerly known as CBTG’s has reopened under new management with the name Plan B Bar & Lounge so that’s at least a huge positive.

Aside from that we got a smattering of new singles from Amer Ali, Doom ‘An Blue, Most Likely Forever and Rick Massie, which is awesome, but the rest of October has been sadly quiet with little in the way of new releases.

We can only hope that the final months of 2020 will be better but that remains to be seen.

Doom ‘An Blue Release New Single and Music Video “Ran Down”

Montreal hard rock and heavy metal duo Doom ‘An Blue, which features Quebec local Jimmy Antle on the skins and fellow Newfoundlander Lee Heache on guitars, have become a staple of the live music scene in Montreal. The group’s schtick of inviting a revolving door of guest bassists and guest vocalists both on stage and in the studio to perform covers from all decades of rock and roll history to their own groovy, hard hitting and sultry originals has made them a favourite amongst the doom and stoner metal crowds in the Quebec metal world.

On Monday, October 19th, the band released their latest single, “Ran Down”, which features Stephanie Lune and Masha Te of the hard rock trio Death Proof (another band that’s worth checking out for stoner / doom fans). You can check out the video for “Ran Down” through our YouTube embed below.

Facebook Introduces New Rules That Targets Musicians

As most of you have probably heard by now the social media giant Facebook is set to introduce new rules effective October 1st that will essentially limit a musician’s ability to “create a music listening experience for yourself or for others”. The way the rules are worded seem to be targeting at livestreaming events, which given the current times we live in, really sucks the big one.

Bands as big as Code Orange and Devin Townsend down to artists from our very own local scene such as Sons of an Eastern Moon have been utilizing Facebook’s livestreaming services to help bring music to fans during a time where physical contact in enclosed spaces like live music venues is incredibly dangerous, if not effectively impossible.

While bands have been slowly getting back to the world of real, in-the-flesh, live shows across Canada, such as Montreal’s Doom ‘An Blue or Newfoundland’s Jim Jones and the Kool-Aid Jammers (who have an upcoming show on September 25th at Bar None) the concept of whether or not this is a good idea to do during a global pandemic is still hotly debated. Many touring artists are opting for the digital space in the interest of not helping to spread COVID-19, especially in the United States.

While Facebook has since updated their original post to clarify their statement:

We want to encourage musical expression on our platforms while also ensuring that we uphold our agreements with rights holders. These agreements help protect the artists, songwriters, and partners who are the cornerstone of the music community — and we’re grateful for how they’ve enabled the amazing creativity we’ve seen in this time.

Our partnerships with rights holders have brought people together around music on our platforms. As part of our licensing agreements, there are limitations around the amount of recorded music that can be included in Live broadcasts or videos. While the specifics of our licensing agreements are confidential, today we’re sharing some general guidelines to help you plan your videos better:

Music in stories and traditional live music performances (e.g., filming an artist or band performing live) are permitted.

The greater the number of full-length recorded tracks in a video, the more likely it may be limited (more below on what we mean by “limited”).

Shorter clips of music are recommended.

There should always be a visual component to your video; recorded audio should not be the primary purpose of the video.

These guidelines are consistent across live and recorded video on both Facebook and Instagram, and for all types of accounts — i.e. pages, profiles, verified and unverified accounts. And although music is launched on our platforms in more than 90 countries, there are places where it is not yet available. So if your video includes recorded music, it may not be available for use in those locations.

While this may offer some form of clarification the wording is ultimately still too vague to really determine what kind of effect this is going to have on musicians who are playing their own music in livestreams or just in video content in general on Facebook.

This move comes during a time when the social media platform’s public image is under scrutiny in the court of public opinion as many feel that the platform has both declined in quality over the course of the last decade, and has acted unscrupulously with the trust of its users through the use data collection.
